Located on Belle Isle, the Island is without doubt the most scenic field in WSEM history. Built on a filed in the baseball complex, it looks to have the deepest overall playing dimensions for 2013. Parking is readily available on Vista Dr. right across from the field.
The city of Detroit has hosted a team every year in league history. Lafayette Park was the home to the Campus Commandos for the first from 2011-12, and now Alex Linebrink has made Belle Isle the new home for our lone Detroit team.
The one big attribute that sets it apart from any field we have ever had is the playing surface. Instead of grass, the entire field is gravel. Like the Wiffle Iron, you hit towards the backstop and its connecting fence which gives it perfectly symmetrical dimensions. The Island also gives spectators many options for where they want to watch the game, including grandstands. The left field bench seems to be the fan favorite spot though, as it gives fans an up close personal feel.
SWOT Report |
Strengths: |
Plenty of Parking, porta-potties nearby, pitcher friendly, ambiance is unmatched, lots of options for fan seating. |
Weaknesses: |
Ground balls are rocket fast, tough to hit homeruns, Belle Isle roads are confusing, windy, foul lines lazily done. |
Opportunities: |
Belle Isle has unlimited opportunities. Seriously, you can easily spend all day here. Would be an ideal spot for a tournament since it has four fields all together. |
Threats: |
No shade, Grand Prix weekend could stop games from being played, fields could be used by baseball/softball teams without warning. |
