Much like the team that was thrown together at the last minute, so was their new home field. It’s not that they hated The Field of Make-Believe, but the current roster lives no one near Wayne/Westland, so it was a necessary move. King’s Castle actually shares a lot of similarities with King Friday’s old home with their wacky dimensions and tall fencing.
Keeping up the 2014 trend of neighborhood fields, King’s Castle is in the middle of a Lincoln Park neighborhood off of Fort St. The field uses ~20’ fencing from an old baseball field as its left field wall. The rest of the home run fence is portable plastic fencing in right field. Although the left field fence is the shortest distance in WSEM history, right field is pretty average compared to other fields. Right center is actually quite deep especially with the tall fencing incorporated; it is estimated at around 110’.
Although the left field distance is very short, the tall fencing can knock down line drive home runs that could go out on other WSEM fields. Also, trees hang over the tall fence and could knock down home runs. Even balls that clear the fence, bounce off the main bark of a tree, and fall back into play aren’t considered home runs. So yes, it is a very hitter friendly field, but not as much as you might think. This field will also be a fan favorite in the summer, as the many trees will provide plenty of shade.
SWOT Report |
Strengths: |
Shade, plenty of street parking, for the hitter: routine pop-up turn into home runs, only having three fielders won’t hurt you, real bases. |
Weaknesses: |
The nearby bathroom is locked (could change in the summer), some of the left field fencing is broken and could cause injury, for the pitcher: routine pop-up turn into home runs. |
Opportunities: |
Has the space for multiple fields to make a decent location for satellite or other tournaments, close to other Downriver fields and The Island. |
Threats: |
The field could be used by other people or a team practicing, angry neighbors, balls hitting cars. |
