Located in Trenton at the corner of Grange and Harrison is The Swamp, home of the Ducks. This location used to be the site of Owen Elementary School, but in 2007, the school was demolished. New homes were planned to be built there, but it appears that has been put on hold. Most of the league does not know this, but there is a little bit of wiffle history at this site. In 2009, when Downriver Wiffle was reformed, this was the site for many pickup games and a failed tournament.
Fast-forward to 2012, the (Thunder) Ducks were looking for their own home after sharing Frenchtown Field with the DeLoppes in 2011. With a lot of open space and plenty of places to park, this site was a great spot to house a WSEM team.
The Ducks use 200’ of silt fencing for their HR fence and backstop, and it’s pretty neutral in terms of a hitter’s or pitcher’s park. One of the coolest parts of the field is the spray painted last names and numbers of the current players on the left field part of the silt fencing, and a retired player (Dale) in right field. Located in the middle of a neighborhood, you will often see bikers and walkers stop to watch games. Also, the inaugural Hallo-Wiffle was played here in 2012.
SWOT Report |
Strengths: |
Plenty of parking, lots of open space for fans, neutral play (no cheap HRs, but fence isn’t ridiculously far either), many locals passing by will stop to watch games. |
Weaknesses: |
No shade, grass can get long, inconsistency with playing field (HR fence is not always the same distances, or the entire field is in a different spot), no bathrooms. |
Opportunities: |
Curious people who pass by could ask about the league, enough room for multiple fields for tournament hosting. |
Threats: |
Not a public park, new homes could be built there without warning and the Ducks would be forced to find a new location, sunburn. |
