Jason Matt Memorial Field, the home of the Wolfpack, is nestled in the back of an old Trenton neighborhood. This field takes extremes to an all new level. The most glaring extreme is left field, where the line measured at a WSEM record long 210’. The other extreme is right field, which has silt fencing for the home run fence and is estimated at around 75’. The right field may seem short, and it is compared to left, but it gets deep quickly. It is very comparable to the right field at Fenway Park.
Most of the home run fencing is from a newly renovated little league field, and the fencing is brand new. The blue fencing is very attractive and gives J-Matt field an authentic feel. In foul territory on the 3rd base side, playing equipment is close to the playing field. The equipment can come into play on foul balls, so be careful. In left field around the 95’ mark, a tree also comes into play. The actual tree is a few feet into foul territory, but some of the branches hang over into fair territory.
Much like the field’s namesake, this field is wacky and ridiculous. One of the wackiest features is the woodchip moat a few feet past the batter’s box. Be careful when running to 1st or heading home. I have a feeling we may see a wipeout or two or twelve this season courtesy of said moat.
SWOT Report |
Strengths: |
Plenty of street parking, porta-potty at the park, very little setup, Little League games played at the same time don’t appear to be a problem. |
Weaknesses: |
Insane left field punishes right handed power hitters, no shade, playing equipment close to field, annoying train whistle. |
Opportunities: |
Perfect field for John Hill for the Thrill, another Downriver field gives traveling teams the chance to schedule multiple series in day; nice park for BBQ’s or a day of fun. |
Threats: |
Sunburn, kids on the playing equipment getting in the way, baseball players jogging before a game, that weird guy. |
